FAQ

Question: Does a Natural GREEN Lawns service cost more than a traditional chemical fertilizer service?

Answer: Our service is priced competitively with your traditional chemical lawn fertilizer companies, and we offer a free lawn assessment with our price quote.  In fact once your organic lawn is established and your soil is back to what Mother Nature intended, typically in about one year, it will require 50%-75% less water than a traditional synthetic chemical lawn.  If you pay for public water, this will significantly, if not fully, offset the cost of our organic-based lawn treatment plan.  In addition, healthy organic-based lawns naturally control unwanted garden pests, often eliminating the need for the broad spraying of dangerous insecticides on your lawn.

Question: Why does a Natural GREEN Lawns require less water than a traditional chemical lawn?

Answer: The broad use of synthetic chemical fertilizers (and all their byproducts) kills your soil’s natural ecosystem, leading to a hard-packed, compressed soil that experiences significant runoff. An established Natural GREEN Lawns soil is ripe with organic matter and healthy microbial life.  This microbial life naturally aerates the soil, rending it softer, spongier, and better able to retain water. Once established, after about a year, we recommend watering/irrigating your Fescue, Bermuda or Zoysia grass no more than once per week, less if there has been any meaningful rainfall.

Question:How does a Natural GREEN Lawn control unwanted garden pests?

Answer: Lawns broadly treated with traditional synthetic chemical fertilizers are a paradise for unwanted lawn pests. Why? Because the dead, depleted soil in these lawns lack the beneficial microbes, fungi and other life-sustaining organisms which naturally control these unwanted pests. At Natural GREEN Lawns, we create a healthy ecosystem in your soil that unwanted pests simply can’t thrive in, and thus avoid. Once your organic-based lawn is established you can significantly reduce, and potentially even eliminate, the use of dangerous chemical insecticides. That’s safer for you, your kids, your pets and the environment. And it’ll save you some money to boot!

Question: If I’m transitioning from a traditional chemical fertilizer lawn to a Natural GREEN Lawns, how long will it take to see results?

Answer: We specialize in seamlessly transitioning our customers’ lawns to organic-based lawns through our “Transition to Organic” program. You will begin to see results in your lawn after our first application!  A traditional synthetic chemical lawn with little weed activity will transition flawlessly.  If weeds are an issue, we can handle that as well. In either scenario, we will discuss different options with you.  Let’s step back for a moment…  Chemical lawn fertilizers, if applied properly, will “green” your grass within a few days because all of the nutrients are in a synthetic form, instantly available to your grass.  At Natural GREEN Lawns, we begin any transition by feeding not only the grass with essential nutrients, but more importantly we feed your soil with healthy organic microbial food sources that bring your soil back to life.  The increased microbes in your lawn convert these organic nutrients into a form your grass can use at the root level.  In other words, we give back to your soil what Mother Nature intended it to have.  What’s important to remember is once your soil is brought back to life, the “results” are perpetual because your soil’s natural  ecosystem has been restored, giving your grass the ability to naturally “green” itself.  The transition is seamless!

Question: Will my lawn see increased weed growth as I transition to a Natural GREEN Lawns green lawn?

Answer: The short answer is “no.” Weeds can be found in any lawn – they are simply “nature” growing in the wrong place. For example, some broad leaf weeds can produce thousands of seeds per plant, and those seeds can survive in your soil for 25 years or more.  We focus on the use of natural, organic-based products.  We apply our treatments at proper times throughout the year, depending on your lawn’s needs and your personal desires to control weeds.

For our “Transition to Organic” customers, we believe the limited use of pre-emergent weed control is acceptable until the grass is full and lush.  The goal is to significantly reduce and eventually eliminate the need for any pre-emergent application.  For our “Naturally Organic” customers, we focus solely on creating that lush, full lawn that will naturally crowd out weeds and prevent weed germination.  It’s your lawn, and our plan is built around your desires.  Can you expect a perfect lawn year round?  Of course not – that’s unrealistic and a promise neither Natural GREEN Lawns or any other lawn company can deliver on.  However, once your organic Natural GREEN Lawn is established and your soil is once again “alive” it will be better able to handle the myriad of stresses that our lawns are constantly subjected to.  Importantly, if you have a cool season grass such as Fescue, cut the grass high, and never cut more than one-third of the grass length.  Remember, we’re your partners, and we’ll provide you with tips throughout the year and be available should you have any questions.

Question: Aren’t the nutrients used by the big chemical lawn companies the same as those used by Natural GREEN Lawns?

Answer:  Yes, and no.  All grass requires the same basic nutrients for survival, with the primary nutrients being (N) nitrogen, (P) phosphorus and (K) potassium. The difference is how these nutrients are delivered, and in what quantity they are delivered.  The focus of a natural, organic-based lawn is the soil.  Not only do we add the required primary N-P-K nutrients, we also supplement the soil with key secondary nutrients and beneficial microbial food sources needed to bring life back to your soil.  It is this microbial life that naturally convert those nutrients into forms usable by the grass.  It’s also those microbes that are destroyed by continued traditional chemical applications.  Thus, the big chemical fertilizer companies deliver primary nutrients in a form that doesn’t require microbial activity, and often totally neglect the secondary nutrients.  Looked at another way, a traditional chemical lawn is essentially a “wasteland” in constant need of these extracted and refined forms of nutrients to survive.

Question: Do your natural, organic-based lawn care products smell?

Answer:  Large-scale industrial farmers often use industrial grade products that can smell, but we don’t.  The natural products we use smell like earthy soil, healthy minerals, and are of the highest quality.  In contrast, your traditional chemical lawn fertilizers and pesticides smell like ammonia and other chemicals, and can be dangerous to people, pets and the environment, so keep off the grass for a few days!  These chemicals can also inadvertently get dragged into the house and find a new home in gaps in your wood floors or the fibers of your carpet.  Once inside, they may may never break down.

Question:  Why do you call your treatment plan “Organic-Based” and not just “Organic”?

Answer:  There are several ways to define the word “organic” as it relates to chemistry, which ultimately is what fertilizers are based on.  At Natural GREEN Lawns we want to represent “organic” in the most conservative way possible.  According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “Organic” is something “…relating to, or containing carbon compounds.”  Well, we don’t consider our spreader as being organic just because it contains steel, for example.  Thus, we conservatively prefer to use the phrase “Organic-Based” when describing ingredients in our fertilizers to reflect that they are, again according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “…relating to, or derived from living organisms.”
